BOOKS AS OBJECTS at Adobe Books Backroom Gallery gathers a selection of books by Sming Sming Books that experiment with the book form as an art object, a phenomenological archive, and an intimate exhibition space.

Sming Sming Books is the publishing practice and studio of Bay Area-based artist and writer Vivian Sming. Since 2017, the studio has produced a wide range of artists' books, zines, and editions. Each book is developed out of close conversation and collaboration with artists whose work and ideas inform the book's design, materials, and printing choices. At its core, Sming Sming Books is committed to promoting critical discourse and advancing cultural equity through the format of publishing.

Sming Sming Books has been collected by over fifty libraries, museums, and universities, nation and worldwide, including the Getty, Whitney, Met, MoMA, and SFMOMA. Select books have been featured in the New York Times, Aperture, 1000 Words, LensCulture, and Hyperallergic. In 2018, Sming Sming Books received the Shannon Michael Cane Memorial Award from Printed Matter.
